What is the 11+ Exam?

The 11+ exam or Grammar School or Private School is an elective exam usually taken at the start of Year 6, usually in September. The content varies in different parts of the country. However, it will usually be based on some or all of the following topics:

The 11+ exam has two main exam boards:

GL (Granada Learning) Research (formerly NFER) administers 11+ exams for most grammar schools in Berkshire, Bexley, Birmingham, Buckinghamshire, Gloucestershire, Kent, Shropshire, Walsall, Warwickshire, Wirral, Wolverhampton.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Subjects : English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning.
  • Each school can choose any combination of these that best fits their selection criteria.
CEM (Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring) is developed by the Assessment Monitoring Center at Durham University, the 11+ exam is administered for Cumbria, Dorset, Lancashire, Medway, Northern Ireland and Wiltshire. Learning Outcomes:
  • Subjects : English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning.
  • Each school can choose any combination of these that best fits their selection criteria.
Schools in Devon, Essex, Hertfordshire, Trafford and Yorkshire have a mix of GL and CEM. The GL and CEM exams place strong emphasis on basic skills in English and mathematics, including spelling, grammar, grammar, comprehension and vocabulary, with mathematical skills, problem solving and data manipulation among
